Wherever you will place the Glass panels like in shower doors, walls, deck railings, glass doors, glass windows, or in stairs they will look amazingly beautiful. Frameless glass panels and framed glass panels, both are available in the market and have their own charm. In ancient times, no one even thought about that a time will come when glass will be used in the manufacturing of many things and will become one of the important elements in the construction of buildings. Maybe it will be a dream of some people to see a house which is made up of complete glass, but now we can see that there are many skyscraper buildings which are made up of glass. It is just an amazing thing when we see such huge buildings with the maximum use of glass in their construction. Glass panels are not being used in glass doors, walls of modern buildings, but technology has taken glass panels to the next level and now we can even see some building with glass flooring. The glass floor at the top of the Eiffel Tower in Paris is one of the most popular examples. People invest so much in glass flooring for attracting tourists, but a common man also want to give his house a stylish look so, he opts for glass panels for stairs. Here we will discuss how you can fit the glass panel for stairs.
The things you will need for fitting glass panels for stairs
- Tape Measure
- Drill and Drill Bits
- Glass Panels
To fit glass panels is a daunting task, but it is not much difficult. You just need the above-mentioned things and some effort and you will be done. Assembly of glass panels for stairs is quite easy. The number one point is to remove your old carpet and any other protruding then continue with measuring and cutting your steps and risers. Check that your handrail and baserail are measured to length. You need to fit the base rail in place first, but remember to not seal the handrail yet. You will need it later to secure the glass in place. First, install the first and the second riser and only after that to install the first step. Cover any gaps between the steps and risers with mouldings.
Then renovate the landing area with winder steps and winder steps’ extensions. Calculate the steps which are required for your staircase. Measure the landing area from the back to the front, then add on 30 mm to this measurement for the nosing of the winder step.
Now measure, cut and test-fit the winder steps and the winder steps’ extensions.
Start with the front portion of the landing, and use a winder step to cover it. Install them: use polymer adhesive, some glue, and secure them with some brads around the outside edges. To cover up these borders with shirking boards, moldings, or with the next riser.
Now replace the newel posts, remove the old handrails, base rails and spindles, if you have not removed them. Then cut the old newel post. Cut after determining the height for cutting them. Keep in mind the following two steps:
- Mark the pitch-line and place a straight edge on the nosing of two or three steps.
- The minimum height required when installing handrails on stairs is 900 mm. So measure from the pitch line the newel post and mark it.
If the posts that you bought have a dowel, bore a 50 mm hole in the centre of the remaining newel base and then you can glue your newel post in place. To hide the gaps between the posts and the bases, use a newel base connector (this needs to be installed before fitting the new posts).
If the posts that you bought have a rod, bore a hole of 50 mm in the centre of the newel base which is remaining and then you can glue newel post in place. Before fitting the new posts, use a newel base connector for hiding the gaps between the posts and the bases. Secure your posts.
Now fit the handrails and the base rails. After that move towards the last step and and install the glass panels. It depends on the design and style of glass penals. Always order panels that need to be clamped to the handrails and base rails, or find panels that fit directly into them.
Before placing your order of glass panels, do not forget to calculate the number of glass panels. The easy way to calculate them to divide the length of the base rail by 350. If you know how to replace the spindles then fitting glass panels is not a big job for you. Use fillets to create the spaces between the glass panels. The process of creating the spaces between them is same as of spindles. Do not forget to follow the legal requirements i:e the distance between the glass panels must not be greater than 99 mm.
You will find happiness with finishing this last step. You have created a new beautiful staircase. You can watch a video of how to renovate a staircase with glass panels for better understanding.
